In recent months, Suncity has been further expanding its links with the Ohana Resort in Vietnam. The junket company from Macau has become one of the bigger casino operators in southeast Asia. In Vietnam, the massive Hoina casino resort is under their future control. Now, the operator stated that they will not push back the pre-opening on the account of the Coronavirus. Instead, the soft opening will take place using a previously agreed timeline.
On the last day of 2019, the operator said that the soft launch should be in Q1 of 2020. This would include the opening of the first phase of the Hoiana casino. The same facility is set in Quang Nam province. This is part of a broader region of the central coast of Vietnam. Once open, Suncity should manage all of its operations, including gambling. Yet, 2020 is currently in the sign of the Coronavirus. Macau already closed down its casinos for a two-week period.
The casino media inquired with Suncity if they are planning the same thing. A spokesperson stated that the situation in Vietnam is very different than that in Macau. This is the reason why the operator is not planning any other changes for the launch. The same representative also said that parts of the resort, including some hotel rooms and casino functions, will be good to go. Essentially, the small part of the gigantic resort would start working. However, there seem to be plenty of open questions about that possibility.
Chinese VIP Market
The aim of the Hoiana resort is clear – catering to the Chinese VIP market. The old hotbed of activity for this demographic, which was Macau, is slowly losing its appeal. This happened because of a range of reasons, including more capital control and a stronger ban on smoking. Instead, regional competitors began expanding their casino offers in recent years. These include Cambodia, the Philippines and also Vietnam.
But, even without postponing any events, Suncity will have a hard time making a soft opening work in this period. Vietnam banned all flights from China to stop the spread of the virus. There are currently 10 cases of Coronavirus in the county. The country’s military is keeping and overseeing almost 1,000 Vietnamese nationals in quarantine. If the situation worsens there, chances are the Suncity will not get a say in the matter if the government orders the casino closure.
