In the US, signs are pointing towards a strong possibility that Virginia will be next to legalize the casino industry. In the state, five cities should get their casino facilities in the upcoming period. A State Senate committee gave a green light for the next step in the legislative procedures on February 4. The move will allow citizens in Danville, Portsmouth, Norfolk, Bristol, and Richmond to vote on possible casinos.
The referendum will take place at some point in the future. But, only if the Virginia House sees the bill advancing there as well. The state is one of a small number of those in the US that prohibit casinos and all of their services. But, in recent years, thanks to numerous pressures both economic and social, an expanding group of states is considering legalizing casinos. The process began in 2018. Back then, the Colonial Downs, a horse racing track set in the New Kent Country was set to open again in 2019.
A group from Chicago bought the racetrack called Revolutionary Racing and wanted to bring back horse racing to the state. This took place most likely on the General Assembly vote that allows gambling on the same track. It also approved off-track betting sites in different locations in the state. The same legislative move also opened up the possibility of creating casinos in different cities in Virginia.
Once the legislative ball got rolling, further voices began adding to the debate. Naturally, there were and still are some who are completely against the initiative. Conservative groups are pointing out the possibility of the same development being an uneven economic opportunity. They believe that the poor inhabitants of the casino locations would gain nothing from them. At the same time, the rich would extend their profits. However, the general economic and development benefit from casinos, especially major ones, seems to have a stronger appeal.
These large-scale casino facilities and associated resorts would not just boost the state’s tax revenue but also bring in new jobs. Initially, these would be related to construction projects and jobs connected with that. However, when the casinos open, the real job market potential would present itself. While many of these employment chances would be low-pay, entry-level positions, the numbers would be well into thousands at these five cities. Any industry that can provide those jobs from the ground-up will have the attention of the local citizens and politicians alike.
