In November, the Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course became the first casino to offer sports betting services in Pennsylvania. Now, after two weeks of activity, the casino officials have stated that the service is bringing in a younger crowd. This is great news not just for the casino but the overall hopes of the US casino industry related to this new service.
Most of them have ended up with an aging audience and a revenue that is struggling to grow. Additionally, a range of punters made an interesting observation over the previous period. According to them, the casino sports betting offer is much more diverse compared to that of the illegal bookmakers. This advantage should be further enforced when the casino opens its online sports betting services in the coming months. The same process will put an additional pressure on the illegal ventures of neighborhood bookies whom the state and the casinos hope to put out of business.
It would be unlikely that the illegal ventures, under this new pressure, will not also try to evolve their offer to compete with the legal casinos. But, even with any possible changes, they will continue to fight an uphill battle in terms of accessibility and overall sense of hospitality the two businesses provide to their customers. In this regard, the illegal operations that are by default shady and focused on the betting and nothing more cannot compare with the established hospitality tradition of the major casino operators.
Upcoming Pennsylvania Sports Betting Venues
William Hill USA, the famous international bookmaker is running the Hollywood Casino sportsbook. But, it is only the first of a series of five gambling ventures that obtained the license for sports betting services. Three of these are set in the Philadelphia area – Parx Casino, SugarHouse Casino, and Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino & Racetrack.
All of them will open either permanent or temporary sports betting lounges in the upcoming few weeks. There is certainly a lot of expectation in the same facilities about the possibility of attracting younger visitors and up-selling them on other casino services. Collectively, this could leave a strong positive impression on the bottom line of the Pennsylvania gambling industry.
