A growing scandal is rolling across the landscape of the rich and famous in the US. It already includes many high-profile names, including bankers, Hollywood celebrities and industry executives. The scandal involves parents who have been illegally pushing millions of dollars into an educational institution. The purpose of this was to allow their children to attend top colleges and universities, even when lacking qualifications.
Now, the scandal has reached the casino industry as well. Here, the damage from all of it could be very intense. The US Attorney General’s Office for the District of Massachusetts is leading an investigation into 33 parents. These are suspected of using their influence and money to make sure their kids can attain higher education in elite facilities. Among the individuals is Gamal Aziz, who is also known as Gamal Abdelaziz. He held important positions at a range of casino operators.
These include MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts. The last position he held was that of the Wynn Macau President and the COO of Wynn Resorts development. He left the company back in 2016. However, he was a key figure in the launch of Encore Boston Harbor casino in Massachusetts. The issue is even more serious because the wealth and influence are not the only problems. The Department of Justice is also bringing charges of conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud, as well as bribery to the table.
Supposed College Scandal Scheme
The officials believe that the scheme included parents paying a supposed contribution to prep and for-profit college counseling. William Singer was running this organization. Once the money was in, the business would use the contribution to manipulate the system. This included everything from entrance exams to the sports program. The purpose of the scam was to allow the children of the powerful individuals to attend top schools. Among these were the likes of Stanford, Yale, Georgetown and many more.
According to the DOJ document, between 2011 and 2019, Singer made pacts with dozens of parents, coaches, and school administrators. Singer’s organization spent up to $6.5 million on the same activities. Aziz sent about $300,000 this way as a gift to a USC account. Here, the objective was to help Aziz’s daughter get into the same school. As the fallout continues, it is highly likely that other names from the casino industry will start to pop out as well.
