The koi fish is a symbol for prosperity and good fortune in Feng Shui and Chinese culture. So it is no surprise that Microgaming’s Quickfire created a Lucky Koi video slot. This oriental slot is pretty standard, with 5 reels, 3 rows and a maximum of 25 win lines, but it is made interesting with a bonus game and free spins.
The Lucky Koi is a real penny slot: You can play the Lucky Koi from a mere 0.01 per spin, with only the middle win line being active. Although I always play with the maximum 25 win lines, when a bet only cost 0.25 per spin. You can increase the coin value to maximum 0.10, and you can bet a maximum of 10 coins per bet line, so the maximum bet is 25 per spin.
Free Spins, Features, and Bonus Rounds
The Lucky Koi symbol functions as a Wild, and the Chinese building is the scatter symbol. When you hit three or more scatter-symbols you will receive a bonus, and you can choose your own bonus. This is something that makes this slot machine something interesting. You can choose between receiving free spins or you can choose to play the bonus game.
I have played on the Lucky Koi slot for a couple of hours, and I hit the three scatters several times, but I am still not sure what’s the best choice. When you have to choose between the bonus game and the free spins, you are told how many free spins you will get — but not with which multiplier — and they don’t tell you how many koi you are allowed to fish for, so it is often a wild guess what is better to choose. My strategy is that when the amount of free spins they offer is low (10-15) I will go for the bonus game, and when they offer a lot of free spins, I’ll take the free spins.
In the bonus game you have to click on a koi in the pond to fish it out of the water. Every koi has a different value, and with some you also get an extra fishing attempt. There is a pretty big range of what you can win, I had times that I won over 10.000 coins with 3 fishing attempts, but I also had times that I only one 1.000 coins with 7 fishing attempts.
Chinese Themed Slot Machines
The Lucky Koi video slot has an Asian / Chinese Garden theme, this shows in the symbols and in the sound track. To be honest, I am glad that you can turn off the music, since I got a bit annoyed by the classic Chinese music within minutes (there is a thin button at the bottom of the game which says “Options”). The graphics are well done, and underneath the reels you can see a pond full of koi fish, which is a nice touch.
There are quite a few video slots with an oriental theme. Even slots with koi fishes and Chinese gardens are not unique. Another video slot that is themed around a Chinese garden with koi fish is the Emperor’s Garden video slot from NextGen, which you should definitely try if you like the Chinese theme of the Lucky Koi.
There is one other video slot with a koi that pops in to mind, and that is NetEnt’s Koi Princess. I remember that iSoftBet has the Super Lucky Reels with the koi as respin-symbol, but besides that it doesn’t really have a Chinese theme.
There are a lot of video slots with an Asian touch, and it seems that especially Quickfire (the creator of the Lucky Koi) likes the Asian and Chinese video slots. Quickfire also released video slots like the Lucky Firecracker slot, Asian Beauty, Tiger Moon, Jewels of the Orient and the Dragon Lady. To celebrate the Chinese New Year Play’N Go made a special video slot, called Chinese New Year (I like simplicity!). Playtech has the Zhao Cai Jin Bao slot and the Chinese Kitchen video slot. Well the whole list of Chinese and Asian video slots is just too big to mention here, but I think you will have at least a couple of nights of fun when you try out the Chinese themed video slots mentioned.

Lucky Koi Slot Demo Video
In the short video clip underneath you can see what the bonus game and free spins look like. Microgaming made this demo video themselves, so the Super Big Win you see at the end of the video clip didn’t happen to me. 😉
The Lucky Koi slot is an average slot, it’s not bad, but it is not really special either. That you can choose your own bonus is a nice touch. If you do get the free spins with a high multiplier you can make get big winnings, but under normally you wil not get very high payouts.
The Luck Koi is not a video slot I would play every day, but it is nice to play this slot just once in a while. The low minimum bet makes this a slot that is not gonna eat up all your gambling budget.
